According to Dr. Oz who put PGX Fiberon his weight loss hot list, the effects of a fiber rich diet can be felt almost immediately and over time add up to huge rewards. Sugar is processed more efficiently, you feel fuller, cholesterol levels drop, the elimination system works better and much more. He recommends getting 25-30 grams of fiber per day. But the average person consumes about 12-15 grams a day. Best bet is to increase consumption of fiber rich foods such as whole grains, veggies and beans. Metamucil comes in wafer, capsule and powder form. The active ingredient in Metamucil is psyllium husk which according to Wikipedia are “portions of the seeds of the plant Plantago ovata, (genus Plantago), a native of India”. One serving of Metamucil equals 3 grams of fiber, except for the wafers which are 6 grams per serving. The amount to take will vary depending on which product you are using.
The key to success with Metamucil and weight loss is to be consistent. By using the product prior to meals, you will most likely not want to eat as much. So controlling your appetite will be much easier. Be sure to drink plenty of water with it, so the fiber can expand in your stomach.
As with any fiber, to much can cause gas and bloating, so start slowly with your Metamucil weight loss plan and build up to taking more of the supplement over several weeks. This will allow your system to get used to it.
